Yes, winter tires are worth it

As much of the country is dipping into temperatures ranging from cold to frigid today, it’s worth reminding everyone that winter tires aren’t just for snow. They’re for cold, too. If you live in an area that dips below 44 degrees for any length of time during the winter, there are several reasons for equipping your vehicle with tires of the winter variety. So, we wanted to revisit a winter tire driving experience we had with Michelin and Tire Rack a couple years ago, where we became true believers that winter tires are a must.

AG files lawsuit against nursing home chain, including 3 with local ties

HARRISBURG - Attorney General Bruce R. Beemer has filed a consumer protection lawsuit against a chain of skilled nursing facilities accused of misleading consumers by failing to provide basic services to elderly and vulnerable residents. Three of the 11 facilities have local ties: Altoona Center for Nursing Care at 1020 Green Ave. in Altoona, Cambria Care Center at 429 Manor Drive in Ebensburg and LaurelWood Care Center at 100 Woodmont Road in Upper Yoder Township.

Hollidaysburg woman arrested for selling drugs to undercover officer

A 54-year-old Hollidaysburg woman has been charged after she allegedly sold drugs to an undercover police officer. According to a probable-cause affidavit, Jacqueline Barnett, Old Route 22, first sold $800 worth of methamphetamine and heroin to the officer on March 18 in Alleghany Township. According to the affidavit, Barnett sold 17.5 grams of meth to the officer on April 21 and nearly three ounces of meth on May 2. After the May 2 buy at Barnett’s residence, state police arrested her.

Las Vegas police arrest second suspect in hit-and-run death of retired police chief

LAS VEGAS (TND) — A second suspect has been arrested in connection to a hit-and-run incident that killed retired Las Vegas police chief Andreas Probst while he was riding his bicycle last month. Probst was severely injured after a vehicle driven by two teenagers intentionally collided with him from behind, causing him to flip onto the car and off his bike, later falling onto the road. The other teenager, in the passenger's seat, filmed the whole incident and posted the video to social media, which went viral as outraged swelled over the hit-and-run attack.

Officers found justified in shooting of man wanted for rape in Lancaster Co.

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — The police officers who shot and killed a man wanted on rape and assault charges in December were found justified in their use of force, the Lancaster County District Attorney's Office announced Friday. The officer-involved shooting occurred on Dec. 28, 2023 in Elizabethtown as officers were trying to serve an arrest warrant for 38-year-old Shane Kelec. Kelec was wanted after police said he raped and assaulted a victim on Dec.

PA lawmakers urge passage of 'Red Flag Laws' in wake of Maine mass shooting

Many in the Commonwealth, and across the nation, are now looking for lawmakers to push for the passage of more Red Flag Laws in the wake of Wednesday’s mass shooting in Maine that left 18 people dead. Under Red Flag Laws, an individual that looks to be a threat to themselves or the public, and holds a license to a weapon, can have that weapon taken away from them. Over a dozen lives were tragically taken Wednesday evening in Lewiston, Maine when accused murderer Robert Card reportedly fired multiple rounds from an AR-15 rifle at a bowling alley and restaurant.

Suspected shoplifter made 4 trips into store in 3 days and was arrested twice

WILDWOOD, Fla. (TND) — A police officer got called to a store “in reference to a retail theft” but after that, the case was anything but routine. This happened at a Lowe's home improvement store in Florida. The officer arrived last Monday, May 6, but the theft happened two weeks before that, on April 22. And that alleged theft may not have been the suspect’s last. The store’s asset protection manager had done much of the work.

Altoona Curve announce new on-field hats for 2018

ALTOONA – The Altoona Curve will have two new hats when they take the field in 2018, the team announced Friday. Team officials said the Curve’s new home hat is black with a red bill and has the team’s "A" inside a keystone logo. Country music star Scotty McCreery coming to Johnstown next March

Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — 1st Summit Arena announced this week that country music singer Scotty McCreery is bringing his act to downtown Johnstown next March. McCreery’s career kicked off after he won the tenth season of American Idol in May of 2011. His upcoming solo tour features special guests Anne Wilson and Noah Hicks. One of the people instrumental in bringing the country act to Johnstown is George Couri, a Johnstown native who now runs an artist management company and represents McCreery.
