Woman killed after being struck by large, metal cylinder near Pittsburgh construction site

Pittsburgh (WPXI) — Authorities say one woman died in an unthinkable construction accident Friday morning in Pittsburgh. Officials say the initial investigation indicates a large metal drum escaped a nearby construction site, rolled down the hill, broke through fencing and hit the woman on the sidewalk. When medics arrived, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Public safety officials say the metal cylinder weighs at least one ton. According to a public safety official, the woman was a staff member at one of the local hospitals and was with one or two co-workers when she was hit.

Family of UPenn student files lawsuit against Panera, claiming daughter died after consuming heavily

A 21-year-old University of Pennsylvania student with a heart condition died after reportedly drinking Panera Bread's new “charged lemonade” drink. A large cup contains more caffeine than cans of Red Bull and Monster Energy drinks combined, according to the lawsuit. The suit was filed on behalf of the New Jersey parents of Sarah Katz. The legal complaint, which was filed Monday, calls the beverage a “dangerous energy drink" and argues that Panera failed to appropriately warn consumers about its ingredients.

UNIVERSITY PARK -- The Penn State football program saw six alums sign undrafted free agent contracts after having five players selected in the 2019 NFL Draft. The Nittany Lions have 11 players from the 2019 team with NFL opportunities. The undrafted free agent signees include tight end Nick Bowers (Las Vegas Raiders), wide receiver Dan Chisena (Minnesota Vikings), punter Blake Gillikin (New Orleans Saints), offensive lineman Steven Gonzalez (Arizona Cardinals), linebacker Jan Johnson (Houston Texans) and safety Garrett Taylor (Buffalo Bills).

Storm sends 2 trees into Johnstown couple's home

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Residents in Johnstown got an unusual wake-up call Monday. Heavy rain and winds sent two trees crashing into Betty Stahlman and Tim Forrester's mobile home in Camoset Village. "Very loud, boom I guess. It sounded like the roof was going to come in. It was very very loud, first one was louder than the second one that's for sure," said Stahlman. Stahlman had a bad feeling going to sleep that night, and her fears came true.

Woman charged for stabbing man with kitchen knife inside Acosta residence

Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — State police in Somerset County say an Acosta woman is behind bars after being accused of stabbing a man during a domestic altercation inside a Jenner Township residence. Authorities say on Tuesday afternoon, troopers were dispatched to the residence, located along 4th Street, for a reported stabbing. Police say the victim, a 57-year-old man, was reportedly stabbed by his girlfriend, 46-year-old Taniya Brooks Mason. Investigators say the man reportedly suffered a large laceration to his left arm and he was transported to Conemaugh Hospital.

Man accused of driving into 2 buildings in Altoona facing charges

ALTOONA - A man accused of driving his pickup truck into an Altoona business and a mobile home is now facing charges. According to police, Thomas Shaheen, 48, has been charged with DUI and several other offenses from the July 14 wreck on Pleasant Valley Boulevard. Police said Shaheen drove his F-150 into the corner of the Leer building owned by Mattas Motorsports around 2 a.m. The wreck caused a gas line to break.

NH sex offender accused of exposing himself at Penn State library

University Park, PA (WJAC) — A homeless man is behind bars in Centre County after he allegedly exposed himself to a woman at a Penn State library. Police say on Wednesday night, 35-year-old Brandon Taylor allegedly watched pornographic material on a computer at the Pattee Library. Police say Taylor then reportedly exposed himself to a woman and asked multiple times for her to perform a sex act on him. Police say Taylor is also a registered sex offender in New Hampshire and that he failed to notify authorities that he is in Pennsylvania.

Richland School District unveils new tennis courts

JOHNSTOWN, Pa (WJAC) — Officials with Richland School District held a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony Friday for its new tennis facility. The facility now stands at the site of the old Rachel Hill Elementary School that was shut down and later demolished. The project cost the district nearly $650,000, but leaves the district with six regulation tennis courts, two of which are for public use. District officials say there were able to get more than just the tennis courts.
