Altoona's Lakemont Park to close this summer for renovations

ALTOONA – Lakemont Park will be closed for renovations this summer, but will reopen on Friday, Nov. 17, for the 21st annual Holiday Lights On The Lake, officials said Tuesday. Changes planned for Lakemont Park include replacing some of the older amusement rides with a new miniature golf course, batting cages, playgrounds, basketball and sand volleyball courts and expanded picnic areas, while keeping and enhancing attractions such as the waterpark, paddle boats, train, roller coasters, antique cars and go-karts.

PA Turnpike Reminds Motorists of Weekend Toll Increase, 5% increase takes effect Sunday

Dauphin County, PA — The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) reminds drivers that a toll increase announced earlier this year is set to take effect just after midnight Sunday. In July, the PTC approved a 5% toll increase for all E-ZPass and PA Turnpike Toll By Plate rates for the entire system except the Southern Beltway (PA Turnpike 576) west of Pittsburgh. This is the first time in six years that the annual increase has been less than 6%.

24 displaced after lightning strike causes fire at State College apartment building

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WJAC) — Two dozen students are displaced Monday morning after lightning struck an apartment building in State College Sunday causing it to catch fire, the Centre Region Fire Administration confirmed. The fire broke out at the Tremont Apartment Complex, which is on the 200 block of Vairo Boulevard. Officials say they were called to the apartment complex a little after 5:30 p.m. Sunday. They say the fire started in Building F.

Huntingdon Co. elementary students create mural to celebrate 50 years of Raystown Lake

HUNTINGDON COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — The Huntingdon County Arts Council is currently hosting an exhibit to celebrate 50 years of Raystown Lake. One of the nearly 20 featured pieces is a larger than life-sized mural designed by students from Standing Stone Elementary School. The mural includes all types of fish and other wildlife that may be seen in and around the popular Huntingdon County recreation area and flood control project.

While details are limited at this time, 6 News is hearing that dozens could be losing their jobs, with the Johnstown area being greatly affected, according to sources close to the situation. Mural honoring Johnstown native, Spider-Man co-creator being installed downtown

Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — Installation of the mural honoring Johnstown native Steve Ditko began this week. Ditko helped create Marvel comic characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. The 49-foot wide and 28-foot-high mural is being placed on the side of the Stone Bridge Brewing Company along Washington Street downtown. Those involved say the project has been more than two years in the making and will be the only Marvel-approved piece of public art in the entire world.

PSU announces retirement of long-time fencing coach Wes Glon

University Park, PA (WJAC) — On Thursday, Penn State announced the retirement of long-time fencing coach Wes Glon after nearly 40 years with the university. Glon began his tenure at Penn State as an assistant coach in 1985 and was named head coach in 2013. In recent years, Glon has been at the center of controversy after two former fencing team members filed lawsuits against him, claiming sexual abuse and harassment.
